Sammy’s ENCHANTED PLACES Collection

Sammy’s ENCHANTED PLACES Collection

It’s a good way to start 2021 when Sammy takes upon herself to express herself through painting! This collection recounts our USA cross-country trip!

Sammy BeeZee – First acrylic collection of 2021!

Sammy had so much fun with her first collection of the year… painting the twin “Watercolor Splash Fun,” that the very next day she asked again for “painting.” This time it was all about acrylics. To my surprise she went for a lot more colors than she normally does… many of them from a darker variety — which is a first for her. Since she loves pushing the brushes to the canvas — very hard… I decided to prepare a painting space on top of the table in our family dining area. As opposed to the last time she was painting, Sammy was a lot more focused on this particular collection. She actually sat there for a while – on her own accord. Again, I just let her be, let her creativity go wild. The only thing I did this time was ensuring she was not spilling paint over the furniture… which she didn’t. I was so proud of her, she had so much fun.

This is Sammy's second acrylic over canvas collection for 2021.  A small collection of tree pieces, a larger 20″ x 16″ piece and two smaller 10″ x 8″ pieces.  I came to realize after the fact that this collection has a genesis on our family’s cross country road trip to the East Coast — already a few of years ago. Sammy had a lot of fun during our trip, and we visited a lot of landmarks along the way. I am not sure why she chose the darker coloring, maybe something to do with the fuzziness of her memories, or perhaps because she just wanted to try something new… or also, it could be because she was happy… Sammy does change the photos and videos she likes to black and white.  All the pictures in this collection were made from memory, although Sammy is known for looking at old pictures she likes very intensively.

This collection spans from Westcoast to the Midwest, to the Eastern Side of the United States.  When displayed they are meant to be in reverse order.  I just happened to take the photo inversed the day she completed her collection.  The head image on this article shows then on the correct order.  The paintings look different under various light conditions, and if viewed from different angles.

Inspiration: I did not have an idea what Sammy was painting until the very end… I though it looked like a fantasy island with volcanoes and fire. Then I saw her looking back at our old pictures from our cross-country trip a couple of years ago. I realized that she was painting her memory of Cannon Beach in Oregon… you can see a picture of us both walking together in the footer of this site. We had so much fun that day. It almost brought me to tears of joy, because those are memories that I treasure as well. It was a bit of a gloomy day when we went there… and yes, the shiny stuff is from her glitter-acrylic choice of paints. It is interesting that this is the first time she actually chose to paint in “portrait” orientation. She normally prefers landscape. But hey… Artist’s choice, I guess.

Inspiration: I am not sure what place she tried to depict here, but what I do know she was enchanted by the mountains when we drove through Appalachian Mountains across West Virginia, and then again crossing the Rockies on the other side of the country. As well as some other mountain ranges across the US (we visited 20 states on that trip). She had her booster seat at the time and would just laugh and giggle while pointing at the rivers on the side of the road, and the sun peaking between the mountains. I think that’s what she’s remembering here… she was able to get an interesting texture to the “mountain” in the picture… by slapping a fat brush repeatedly… and looking at the additional layers, of color depth – I think she’s remembering seeing mountains lining up at the distance. If it is indeed West Virginia, she did freak out a bit with the turnings on one of the winding roads, we had to stop and let her out of the car to stretch her legs. She felt better after that, knowing Sammy, that could have been something that called her attention…. she did love the rest of the ride looking at the beautiful countryside.

Inspiration: I am 99% sure Sammy was painting her memory of the Iowa Falls… Sammy essentially lost her $#!^ when she saw the falls from the viewing area when we visited that landmark during our cross-country road trip… It was either the noise or the power of the water… whatever it was she was scared, and we had to take turns with mom to see the falls, having one of us staying with her in the car at the time. But then she saw the these now old videos and pictures of our visit to the falls, she smiles. I have a picture of the falls on my desk… when painting this piece Sammy kept asking for blue paint, I obliged, and at first didn’t realize what she was doing… then she turned the canvas upside down… wham… there are the falls… this picture like the previous ones is very abstract, but a much closer attempt to concretely depict her memories. Depending on the light and angle the actual colors do seem to change… for the last picture there is this haze if you see it from one side. Finally, I realized she was depicting the mist from the falls. I cannot wait to see what she will come up with next.

This small collection adorns Sammy's bedroom.  HLC
